7:33 am - Next time there’s a rodent in my pants...
Next time there’s a rodent in my pants, I’m going to shake it out over the tub instead of my bedroom floor in the hopes of teaching Smokey that he can have more fun with it there because it can’t get away unlike my bed.

If I had been more awake and thinking clearly, I might have thought of it at the time.  But, what can you expect at 4:30 AM?

1:41 pm - Varmet update
Well, two of the three invading raccoons have been successfully re-located.  We’ll see if I can catch the third one tonight.

Yesterday morning, the neighbor's small dog was barking at a much bigger coon.  I believe the whole neighborhood is infested with them.

9:00 am - Bandits in the night – the wildlife verity
Let me tell you, there is nothing like waking up at 3:45 AM to the sound of bags rustling in the kitchen.  I attributed it to the cats.  I tried to go back to sleep, but the noise persisted.  I decided to get up.  With Smokey at my feet, I saw two shadows scurrying about in my kitchen and flipped on the hallway light to catch the back half of a coon slipping through the cat door.  I proceeded through the kitchen, flipping on lights, and to the garage.

Two adolescent coons briefly looked up shocked before running for cover.  I chased them around with a broom for a bit without success and decided to change tactics.  I returned to the house, put on pants and shoes and opened the garage door from outside.  One dashed out as soon as the door opened; the other stayed firmly hidden behind the water heater.  Poking it with a broom only caused it to hunker down and hiss in irritation.  I decided to wait in the car for it to come out.  Instead of leaving, the other returned.  I chased them around with the broom.  The cats hissed at them, and they just skittered around the garage.

One cheeky little bugger chattered at me while swiping a handful of spilled cat food.

Finally, they left and I closed the garage door and kept the storm door into the house closed.  I then stepped out the back door to see if it was cooler outside than the house, and there were four eyes reflecting light at me.

So, I have two adolescent coons living under my deck.  I will have to stop by Grandpa’s and borrow the trap to rid myself of my nighttime visitors.

10:05 pm - Smokey's guest
Well, this is turning out to be an exciting evening.  Not only did I get called about my resume, Smokey brought another playmate into the house.  I was walking down the hall to put laundry into the washer when Smokey dashed past the end of the hallway and into the darkened living room.  I saw him dash along the outer wall and behind the TV.  He headed back to the other end of the room chasing a dark fast moving oval.  It dashed past me with Smokey in chase and skittered into the kitchen.  Smokey pounced and it turned back the other way.  At this time I got a chance to identify it as a baby rabbit.

I proceed to the garage to put my pants into the washer and grabbed the shoebox off the dinning room table to go in search of the furry toy.  I found Smokey lying under the skirt of my bed.  He decided to move on under the bed, and I got down on the floor to see where his prey has gone.  Smokey was on the other side of the bed by the headboard prodding with his paw at the rabbit, who was hunkered down beside the post of my headboard and under some papers.  I tried to lure Smokey away to make it easier, but he was not cooperating.

I returned to the other side of the bed to box the rabbit and found Cleo approaching the hiding rabbit.  I tossed her out of the room and managed with ease to cover the rabbit with the shoebox.  After finding a sturdy piece of cardboard to slip under the box, I carried the intruder outside and let it go to hide under the neighbor’s shed.

I prefer when he brings in the dead things verses the live ones.

8:06 am - Is it the weekend yet?
Arrggg!!!!

The hum of irritation is lurking under my skin. My head hurts, the drugs aren’t working that well, and I’m ready to go buy a pop I don’t need. It’s going to be a fun day full of biting my tongue and annoyances. I should go to the park and walk tonight or practice my tap. That seemed to help on Monday. Or I could see if Steph is free and have chocolate in some form - also not what I need.

12:20 am - Early Christmas Gift or Discarded Toy
This morning as I filled the cats’ food bowl, I noticed something a few feet away on my living room floor. Despite the shadows of the fall morning, I knew what the dark three inch item was before turning on more light. I inspected the tawny furred creature with the added illumination. It was a vole (AKA meadow mouse or field mouse) laid out on its side with front feet curled towards its chest. My first thought was how glad I was that I did not step on the deceased vole. That would rate up there with the large squished spider in my shoe and stepping on the toad.

Since Smokey so proudly brought in a similar item last fall, I believe him to be the giver of such a wonderful gift. At least, it was dead and not alive like the blue jay from last month. I also find comfort in the fact he opted to display it in the living room rather than on my bed.

3:24 pm - Indecorous thoughts at unsuitable times
This past Sunday Sara, one of my Sunday school kids, was telling about her dad wining three games of a matching game that they played. She said, “He has skills.” My mind automatically pulled up some foggy memory of song lyrics – a guy singing about his girl and commenting “she has skills.” I quickly restrained the chuckle that wanted to burst forth at the inappropriate association. My next thought was, “I have to tell Steph,” because I know she will get a chuckle out of it too.

Oh, how ones mind associates things… at least it is good for a chuckle or two if only in the privacy of my mind.

12:13 am - hello world
Well, here I am wiggling my toes into the waters of the LiveJournal pool. I am writing my first entry and becoming great friends with the help pages.

I have no real clue as to what I will put in here and have no great hopes of anyone other than theneonpenguin and a few family members reading it. Maybe, I can come up with a few amusing anecdotes to share. But first, I should probably find a cool picture to upload for an icon and decide how I want my journal to look… (I really wish they would show each choice without having to change your settings, save it, and then look at your page – what a pain.)… what colour scheme to use till I look up the colour codes to play with picking my own, and all the other neat tricks I will learn about.

Well, it’s not much more than “hello world,” but isn’t that how all forays start. Now with my first post behind me, I am wading in the calm shallows close to knee deep. I am not proficient enough to compete in a 50 meter freestyle race, but I am making a few waves.

Goodnight.
